A Day in the Cinque Terre

Published on

You can take the train through the Cinque Terre, twenty minutes from village to village. We walked. It was lovelier and a good deal harder.

The trail clings to the cliffs, now across vineyard terraces, now through narrow lanes with washing strung overhead.

Every village looks like a spilled box of paints.

The five villages

  • Monterosso — the only real beach

  • Vernazza — the prettiest harbour

  • Corniglia — up on the rock, but no way down to the sea

  • Manarola — the postcard view

  • Riomaggiore — loveliest in the evening

In the end we sat on the pier with tired legs and ate fritto misto from a paper cone. The day got no better — and didn’t need to.
